From the ERB Tributes & Condolences File
After the death of his father in 1950, Jack Burroughs received a flood of letters of condolence. This letter from an old friend of Ed Burroughs -- R. M. Patchin -- is especially interesting, as it brings to light a remarkably significant event that took place in 1899. Ed received a severe blow to the head, from which he suffered from periods of amnesia, headaches and even nightmares and possibly an altered mental state, for much of the rest of his life.

A SUMMARY OF THE HONORS' PROJECT
of JOHN COLEMAN BURROUGHS
Pomona College, California
"Jack was very successful in his four years at Pomona College and he graduated with honours in 1934 (Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum lauda). For his graduate project he acquired some real sabre-tooth tiger bones from the Los Angeles County Museum, which had recovered them from the La Brea tar pits. He then used these bones for inspiration in the creation of a model of a saber-tooth tiger, which was considered an outstanding piece of work and was placed on exhibition at the Los Angeles Art Museum."
